Welcome Home (Bonny Lad)

I was travelling home after singing my songs in a bar
I was singing along to the radio in my car
I was starting to drift from the line,
that was leading me to the River Tyne
When I heard a voice calling to me in the night
Now the A1 is a long and a narrow track
But whenever I travel it always leads me back
So I blinked maybe once or twice,
I rubbed and rubbed at my eyes
But there was this voice, still calling to me in the night
It said, Welcome home now bonnie lad
Where've ya been we've missed ya
							Welcome home now bonnie lad
							Now stay around a while
I looked and I looked but still there was no body there
I turned off the radio but the voice was still clear
With Gateshead ahead at the end of the line,
My next stop would be the River Tyne
Then I heard it again still calling to me in the night
Chorus
I saw all the signs that say 'tiredness can kill'
They say, 'Take a break', stop before you're over the hill
But I wound the windows down,
I filled the car with the magical sound
Of the voice that was calling out to me in the night
Chorus
I looked for a clue to the singer in my headlight's glare
Then I caught just a glimpse of her in the air
She was tall, she was proud and free,
Her arms were reaching out to me
The Angel of the North calling me in the night
Chorus,
I smiled to know that an angel kept me from harm
I was driving so fast just to lie in my angels arms
So I gave her a wave and a smile,
Then I knew that my last couple of miles
Would be spent with the angel calling out in the night
Chorus
